We reveal the inspiration behind our new limited-edition range, The Alchemy Collection.
Influenced by the mystical elements of alchemy, the new limited-edition collection helps you unlock the magic of transformation to elevate your self-care routine. But who were the alchemists that inspired this collection and what was their purpose in life?
The goal of alchemists
These days alchemy is thought of as legend – people concocting magical potions in secret workshops centuries ago. You see, alchemy had various fantastical goals that help contribute to this lore, including the quest to turn base metals like lead into noble metals like gold and silver; to create an immortality elixir; and a panacea, a remedy to cure all diseases. The ultimate quest for alchemists was a substance called the philosopher’s stone (yes, that of the Harry Potter series) that was believed to be able to accomplish all these aims and more.
The ancient practice of alchemy sought to understand the synergy of the earth, the stars, the elements and all things in-between. While the alchemist pursued a lifelong quest in the physical realm, this process of transformation was also applied to personal growth; to achieve a deeper understanding of the universe and the human experience and to attain more awareness.
However, beyond the legend, it is believed to be true that alchemy is the origin of modern-day chemistry.
The origins of alchemy
According to many, alchemy originated in ancient Egypt. By 332 BC, Alexander the Great's conquest of Egypt brought Greek philosophers into contact with Egyptian practices, leading to a fusion of theories. This amalgamation resulted in khemia, later evolving into alchemy during the Arab occupation of Egypt.
Alchemy and the western world
The introduction of alchemy to the West occurred in the 8th century when Arab influence brought it to Spain. This dissemination marked the beginning of alchemy's journey across Europe, sparking widespread interest in the transmutation of metals and the quest for immortality.
Independent developments in China and India
Apart from its roots in Egypt, alchemy also independently emerged in China and India. Taoist monks in China pursued elixirs that focused on longevity and vitality. Similarly, Indian alchemy incorporated methods to purify the body and prolong life, contributing to advancements in metallurgy (the field of materials science and engineering that studies the physical and chemical behaviours of metallic elements) and chemical identification.
The alchemy evolution in Europe
In Europe, alchemy's popularity surged, with alchemists divided into scientific and philosophical pursuits by the 16th century.
In 1936, it came to light that famed scientist Isaac Newton had been an alchemist when he was alive (1642 – 1727). The fact he lived to the ripe old age of 84 in a time when the average life expectancy was 35 was a pretty solid clue... According to his unpublished works, he dedicated decades of his life to alchemy in secret, fearing that it could affect his reputation as a respected scientist. Being an alchemist was risky business - over the years alchemists were imprisoned by rulers keen to discover their secrets, while charlatans revealed not to be true alchemists were often executed.
Legacy and Modern Significance
While alchemy's scientific aspects led to advancements in chemistry, its spiritual teachings endure in the pursuit of personal growth, authenticity, and a deeper connection with the universe. Alchemy's fascinating history and legacy remind us of humanity's timeless quest for knowledge, transformation, spiritual enlightenment and longevity.
