Why mindfulness for kids is crucial and how Rituals is making a change

Rituals is the founder and exclusive sponsor of the Super Chill Foundation; here’s how it’s helping to build a future generation of mentally resilient children

In our fast-paced, high-tech world, it’s become obvious that to adapt to the demands of modern life, we need to put more focus on our mental health. According to a report by the World Health Organisation, by 2030 depression will be the biggest sickness in the world. It’s a scary prediction, but what if we started building mental strength at a young age? Would we have a future generation of emotionally resilient children? That’s exactly what the Super Chill Foundation is trying to do.

Planting the seeds early

As adults, some of us incorporate things like mindfulness and meditation into our lives, but our brains are so well-versed in multi-tasking that it can take a lot of practice for adults to learn new habits. Kids’ brains, however, are more like a sponge. Various studies have shown that children learn faster than adults. This is largely down to neuroplasticity (the brain's ability to create and alter its connections, pathways, and wiring based on experiences.) This enables children to swiftly learn (and unlearn) habits, routines, approaches, and actions. It’s how they can pick up new languages faster, learn new skills and tackle countless subjects at school. So why, then, don’t we also teach them vital life lessons in emotional resilience while they are young? With predictions saying that 1 in 4 people will be impacted by mental health illness in their life – could mindfulness be just as helpful as maths?

Super Chill’s app

Rituals is the founding partner and exclusive sponsor of the Super Chill Foundation. Their mission? To help children view their mind as a superpower and give them the tools to turn moments of discomfort, into moments of chill. They have created a free, playful and easy-to-use app for kids aged 6+. It features playful exercises that teach them skills for dealing with difficult situations. At the moment, this app is being launched in the Netherlands in Dutch, English and German, and in the coming years, it will also be introduced to more and more European markets.

How it works

Some days are easier than others – it’s the same for kids as it is for adults. From the first day at school and not being able to sleep, to feeling homesick and not wanting to leave their parents. Even just waking up in a bad mood – emotions have the power to completely take over our body and mind, and negatively affect our day. The Super Chill app is full of exercises for children to help them pinpoint difficult emotions, and then teach them how to deal with them. On the app, the children can pick an animal as their avatar and select their emotions. Based on how they are feeling, they will be recommended exercises inspired by breathwork, yoga, mindfulness and meditation to work through their emotion and build a happy and positive mindset.
